So, I have decided to follow suit with a friend and start a blog. It's something I've considered many times but ultimately never really followed through with. Hopefully this goes well and I will actually think about putting out my thoughts in web format rather than my normal internal monologue.
I've discovered two things this week..
One: vacations are never long enough to dull the mind rotting soul sucking ache that is my job... some days are better than others as with any job, but most of my days seem to be those others. I'm moving up in the world of my company, but there aren't any real benefits and we've had a lot of cutbacks as most places have, so the usual lowered call volume of moving up in rank is offset by the lower amount of people in general.
Two is that no matter how much sleep I get I seem to be perpetually tired. Or I go to bed early to give myself enough sleep time and I toss and turn or wake up every 30 minutes. My solution? I'm going to try taking Valerian Root, I abhor taking sleep aid pills because they always leave me groggy and they still don't always work so I'll try the herbal remedy and see how it goes.
Back to my vacation... I had a blast! I spent 2 days driving to Las Vegas; where I grew up; to visit my folks and mainly go to the DeafNation World Expo. I wandered Fremont Street Sunday night trying to work myself up enough to actually start talking to someone or anyone.... Didn't happen. I find myself to be incredibly shy and awkward in those situations. I never want to interrupt someones conversation, especially considering some of these people know each other, and may not have seen each other in many many years. Then... what will they do when they find out I'm hearing and interrupting the conversation they were having, and then they may think that I'm inept because I'm not able to keep up with all of the conversation and I may have to ask what something means.. So Monday comes.... and I wake up early to wait in line for an hour and a half to get in the doors at Expo, the guy standing next to me started talking to me, complaining about the line and that our digital registration wouldn't work to get us in the fast line.. boo for that. We started chatting about where we grew up and such, good conversation and it helped pass the time. We finally got in and went our separate ways. I wandered around for a while, looked at the booths found some interesting things but alas not enough money to really buy anything. Monday night I went to the Expo pool party at Treasure Island. I had a drink, wandered around for a while, then finally decided to go into the pool. Still feeling awkward about opening conversation with anyone some people next to me said hi, yay! I met James, Lisa, Elizabeth and Conrad, all very awesome people and thankfully didn't slow there conversation much when they found out I was hearing. They also boosted my ego a bit by telling me that I was a very good signer, woohoo.James also took me over with him to get our picture taken with Matt 'The Hammer' Hamill ( Deaf UFC fighter).
Tuesday same as Monday minus the line really, Wednesday I took the day off from Expo and visited Adams parents and watched Avatar (pretty good movie, lots of imagination). My parents came over after work and we all had a nice dinner together. Thursday back to Expo, wandered a while, went to a workshop with Matt Hamill learned about his life and how he got started in wrestling as well as UFC. Later in the afternoon went to another workshop and learned about sex signs both proper medical terminology as well as slang, very interesting and a little funny.
Friday I took the day off relaxed and was lazy. Saturday I went to Lake Mead with my parents, had a blast and got lots of sun (so now I'm all peely)
Now I'm back home and back into the work grind, still have almost two months before school starts again and my life returns to its usual busy state.
